These models can receive the intercom "page", but cannot talk back without lifting the handset to talk.

As much as I remember has to be Speakerphone not hands free on Icm. Meaning you can reply on Icm. call not outside line or Page. Havn't touch Comdial about 6 years.

I think I got it, so they have internal speakers, but not internal microphones, hence the need to pick up the phone?

Wait. You have a speaker to monitor any call on an outside line but if you wish to speak you must use the handset, no microphone, correct. But, on an intercom call, it can be hands free one way. It uses the speaker as a microphone. If a party intercoms you using the handset, you can respond hands free, if they leave the handset down, your phone will ring and you need to pick up to talk. That's how I remember it, but I have been wrong before. One time when I thought I was wrong and it turned out, I wasn't.

There was a little raised portion of plastic in the molding process that held the transmitter up off the phone for answer back. It didn't work very well.

"gain swithing" - on intercom calls, the handset mic's sensitivity was turned way up, to pick up your response.
If you initated an intercom call with your handset in the cradle (your phone on monitor speaker), the other phone "rang" instead of voice announce. Or, you could lift your handset, press ITCM, dial the other extension, and then press ITCM again to switch to ring. Keep pressing ITCM, and you keep toggling the ring/page

The toggle between voice announce and ringing is standard on all Comdial products made in Charlottesville. I'm not sure about the DX80.

Thanks guys. I understand how it works now..i think. Pick up the handset and press Intercom, dial the ext. number and it will call the other party over the speaker, press intercom again and it will ring, press intercom again to toggle.
Seems like you would think ringing would occur before the page-like intercom.

I'm not sure about that system but newer KSU's can be programmed to "ring first" or "voice announce first". You can even voice announce block if you want to. Also look at the xmit side of the cradle you will see a strip of plastic molded in (about 1.25" long), this holds the the xmit side of the handset up off the phone so you can use it for answer back.
