Thanks to all who replied. Skip, you made me dust off the "little gray cells" when you mentioned "bell tap" and "bias spring"

I have an old 500dm in beige free for the taking. I hate to send it to the junk pile.

Is a B2AL list 1 or 2 ringer compatible to a C4A, assuming we got the part numbers correct.

A Quick Update - Yes, reverse polarity was the issue. The customer was technical enough to reverse the wiring. Thank you so much for your help. I've ordered several polarity guards and will take your recommendations. Thanks to all. Best Wishes!

I found a home for the 500DM rotary desk set. Thanks to all who pm'd me.
Also, for what it is worth; When we installed an old pre polarity guard TT phone we found that when the T and R were reversed and you held the hand set receiver to your ear you would not hear any TT's as you pushed the buttons and of course you couldn't break dial tone. If the line polarity was correct and you’re heard the TT's but couldn't break dial tone then our friends at Telco hadn't translated the line for TT.

Don't forget that a diode was often installed in rotary dial sets behind key strips. This was so that the phone could be restricted from making outgoing calls on reversed CO lines, but still allowed the phone to dial on intercom calls.
