Was reverse polarity the reason the bells would ding in step with dialing numbers on a rotary phone?
Yes. I first saw it on 500 sets. But it may not have been universal on all models and manufacturers. I seem to remember that it was the idle phones that were reversed that "dinged". Perhaps I could have just adjusted the bias spring as Skip says but I just corrected the polarity to stop it.
