Client wanted to be able to send an alarm over their existing paging system to satisfy the government without running wires throughout the plant.

At some point before, I had found by accidentally placing my toner on the paging port of the KSU, it would sound out over the speakers.

So my plan was to install a 12 vdc siren which contained lead to it's own speaker. I then connected wires from those speaker leads and X-connected to the paging port, but instead of getting the "siren sound" all I got was a steady tone.

While they claim they would accept this, I would prefer the real siren sound.

What am I doing wrong? This may be a moot point, as since then they asked if it's possible to have alert tones for shift changes, breaks etc added. For that I submitted a bid with a Viking CTG-1 tone generator and I believe that unit will do what I want. However if they won't spend the bucks for that unit, I'm stuck with my existing problem.

Some sirens have 3 wires ..common..steady and warble If thats not it then try putting a non polarized cap. in series with the input.

If the cap doesn't work feed the 12v through a relay contact back onto the coil of the relay. It will cut in/cut out/cut in/cut out etc.

It might simulate a true warble.

Does the siren have a driver built in? It should have leads for steady or warble tone like Merritt said.

Merritt: It does have 3 wires, common, steady & siren. This I didn't use the "Steady" one....planned for future use if I need it. I did try it though. Gives a steady tone as well, but different sound.

Sam: That's what I was thinking on the way back from site so I went to my supplier. Of course their tech wasn't there but the saleman thought this would do what you're talking about.

Jeff: must have (see answer to Merritt)

Dave, that's what I thought you were using, a standard alarm siren.
A lot of the houses around here use a speaker in the ductwork with an external driver module connected in the alarm panel.

Would have used a speaker but I wanted the ability to connect to the output. With a speaker, I couldn't....they're enclosed.

The alarm suppliers sell an identical unit but without a siren driver, so it just has a set of leads coming off the speaker. Not sure what you meant by enclosed.
