press 397 while the handset still on hook.
Then press the button you'd like to program.
Then dial the application to access the voice mail system (2503 by default.)
Then press speaker to hang up.

I thought that voicemail is 278. When you forward all calls to voicemail its fwd-278, right?

By looking at the part number mthomason gave us, I figured it was an axxess/axxent system. To dial into voice mail, it would have to be 4 digits.

The voicemail application can be whatever extension the installer makes it. By default, if you create the applications in order, (on the AXXESS)the voicemail extension could be either 2503 or 2504 depending how the installer sets this up. On the AXXENT system, extension 278 could be your voicemail extension if the installer were to create the applications in order. Either system AXXESS or AXXENT, you can make the voicemail appllication extension whatever number you want, its hard to tell somebody what the default number should be because every office makes it different, including Inter-Tel themselves.

There really is no reason to press the FWD button followed by the voicemail extension, because 1 the system has forwarding paths built into the station, and 2 the DND button can be programmed to send all calls directly to voicemail. I guess the only reason to press the FWD button followed by the voicemail extension would be if the DND button was not programmed to send all calls to voicemail.
