i'm a phone/cable/fiber/network guy but have installed a few camera systems. usually off the shelf type thing.

now i have a customer that wants a small setup. 8 cameras. 2 of them are to be 0lux. would prefer color but i know that 0lux will probably be b/w.
wants some sort of dvr. network connectivity. wants to be able to view any camera over the network or internet. he also only wants it to record if it detects motion (preferrably thru some sort of software thingy instead of seperate motion sensors).

he (or me) can put together a pc with a huge drive and some sort of backup in it & a nic card. no problem. can also connect it to the network & route a static external ip address to it no problem.

would it be better to go the pc way with some sort of pci capture cards & software?
OR
would a ready made type system be better?

running the cable is no problem. bnc ends are no problem. could anyone reccomend something to me?

There is so much equipment out there that meets these needs. 1) How much is he willing to spend? and 2) Given the choice; go with a DVR appliance and nip the notion of a PC based unit now, unless of course its about the bottom line.

my preference is a pc based system. i also prefer buying them already built. this way all parts should be compatible. you can them with linux if you are worried with stability.
a day/night camera will give you clor , and then switch to b/w in low light situations.
any good dvr software should have the ability to record motion from the software.

I perfer a dedicated DVR, non PC based. Their are a lot of them choose from. I have been using nuvico and have had a lot of success with them.
They have a ton fo day/night cameras on the market.
(color by day, b/w at night or low light situations).

Like sam said, either way you go, any good software should allow you motion detection. Most stand alone units can be intergrated with alarm systems and other devices. so if an alarm trips all cameras will start to record

Have you had any experience with the Panasonic IP cams, I have seen a demo of a few of these and they look pretty good, I would like the opinion of someone who has actually installed these, what are some of the pro's and cons you have come up with.

I installed a MACE branded DVR today and the web view is absolutely pathetic, i will be sending it back.

Anthony, do the nuvicos allow for independent viewing over the net, such that local users main monitor is not affected?

Take a look at the Speco Technologies Triplex systems. Seem to work well. Just be sure to get the model that has the network option.

found out that he DOES want to build a pc based system with a huge hard drive and some sort of dvd burner for backup. given that....i'm guessing i'm looking for some sort of pci based cards with some sort of software.

not sure how much he is willing to spend. it is going to be for a very small storage type place. 6 units monitored & the 2 0lux cameras are for monitoring the outside stuff.

i can see if will give me a price range.

Rusty to be honest I never actually checked, though I do belive they do. They are Quadruplex systems. I have been using the DV3 Series, SO far so good.
