It turns out the CNF cards don't count towards ports-- so I have 540 ports in the system.
I filled in empty spaces with "dummy" extensions, and even had to create two dummy lines on GS cards (which then I busied out with Line Maintenance), but for now there's no worry that I'm "over" capacity.... I might move card 48 into slot 32, to see if a card will work there. Right now, Stn 48 has 12 DVAs on it, so I'll probably move it late at night.

ok, to really check, try putting a card into slot 49 and see if you ' see ' the card identifer..
My Guess is No. over 540 ports.

My Guess is No. over 540 ports. I noticed even before I installed STN 48 that the lowest I could get the cursor to move on the F screen was that slot when on cabinet 3-- it would wrap back up to the CNF card when I attempted to cursor down to 49. Also, there are 9 empty slots in Cabinet 3-- 12*9=108; 648-108=540. I now know with absolute certainty that I have 540 ports.

That would be correct, BUT, You can get the 540 option upgraded to 648 to use the rest of the cabinet, contact your phone vendor...

There's no immediate need for that upgrade now-- but I know who to call to get it. But, before I do much more to it, I'm running the System Self Test to see how healthy it thinks it is....

The IDS is/was a nice system, BUT, the system self-test wasn't too reliable.

Yeah, I'm not sure how much I can trust it... The manual says that DID cards will fail (which it does), but it doesn't say whether CNF cards will also fail-- I get a failure at 2 4 6 8 10 and 12 on all three CNF cards. Also, one of the T1 cards fails on all 24 ports... Maybe that's a timing issue...
But, yes, as clunky and old as that system is-- it principally does what it should and is perhaps underutilized. I'm sure there are systems out there that make this one look pretty snazzy.

As far as ' other ' systems.. the IDS was/is KING!!

That particular T1 was not connected to a CSU/DSU... it was "administratively down"... Yes, the more I learn about the IDS, the more I like it...

Update: From: IDS Manual Issue F: Conference port cards are added in groups (3 for the 648 and 2 for the 432, one in each cabinet) to a maximum of 5 Conference port cards in each cabinet. However, for each group of Conference port cards installed, the maximum configuration of system is reduced by 24 (for the 432) or 36 (for the 648) ports. Ok, it does look like we have 576 ports installed of 540 available... Looks like the software upgrade to 648 is the way to go at this point.... ------------------ We can forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light. - Plato [This message has been edited by Orac (edited January 03, 2005).]
