Active Voice did not design a way for retrieving deleted messages. You can try to use the undelete command from the command prompt. I've tried this method twice and was only successful the first time.

I am using ver7.51 and have checked the system management guide and can't find anything about retrieving Deleted messages.

Nope, once you delete it it's gone.

It's not in the manual. Like I said, Active Voice did not design a way for you to retrieve it. But, if you know how to work with DOS and the Undelete command you might be able to retrieve it from the OS2 command prompt.

I don't think the DOS undelete command will work with OS2. You would also have to know the exact file name to undelete.

It works the same on os2. I've done it with help from a DOS guru but was successful once out of the two times I've tried. You're right, you won't know the file name so you'll have to undelete all the files until no more. The longer you wait to undelete the harder it gets because there are more deleted files or the deleted file that you want has been written over. Then play the undeleted files in Cool Edit or copy back into a greeting field and play it using the local port function. It's quite a bit of work even if you know what you're doing.

Phone systems are commonly hacked. Lately we've had alot of cutomers who have setup subscribers with blank passwords and allowed trunk to trunk transfers and didn't place limits on outdials.

Lately many systems have been hacked and alot of calls are going to the middle east and Pakistan.

We've had dealers and the FBI both request that we retrieve deleted voicemails. It's not possible.

There is an internal timer that cleans up the database every so often and when that trigger hits, that message is gone forever.

Same problem with Key Voice. If you catch it right away (within 30 seconds or so), you can usually catch it. After that, unless it's on a backup from the day before or something like that, it's gone.

We also have seen the same trouble with people exploiting voicemail systems to call Pakistan. Time to really start locking them down and warning customers of the possibilities, and what to look out for!
