Greetings All

Here's the issue. We do consulting for s major school district and the the local telco guys often lift the POTS pair on telephone dialers for their security systems.

These dialers do not report failures like modern dialers. They are old, and dumb. (the dialers that is) The reason the telco pulls the pair is because the dialer has a REN of 0.0, so the lines look clean.

Tagging and flagging the lines has not worked so what I am suggesting is to give these lines a REN of something more than 0.0, artificially. This way the lines look like a set is attached and will be less likely to be disconnected by accident.

Sure, we could hang a ringer on the line at the dialer but I think a coil-cap combination would be neater.

Any suggestions...

Len

Spot On ttech!

This looks exactly like what I need. I even found out what's in the box! Can you suggest a local (or mail order) supplier too!

Thanks

Len

Len, half-ringers save people from lots of phantom problems, yet most people have absolutely no idea what they are.

Here's a similar thread from today that may enlighten you on this subject.

CHECK THIS OUT

You can obtain these through any wholesale supplier that carries Suttle products.

Thanks to all!
Half ringers are on our order list. We have a CO line that has hum, now and again, and are also ghost chasing. As I recall, all the sets are behind a KSU and they have powered ringers so there really is no ringer on the CO line. These may help this issue as well.

Again thanks and I'll post results later..

A series resistor-capacitor combination would be close enough to show on line tests. Over here a 1.8uF cap plus 3.9k resistor would be a pretty close emulation of our standard 1.0 REN ringer.

Our master jacks (which also serve as the dermarcation point) actually incorporate the 1.8uF ringing capacitor for the phones, and they have a 470k out-of-service resistor so that tests can show if a line is actually open or simply has no phones connected.

Paul -

Sounds like BT has their act together. When I put big plants together (usually a GTE CO installed as a PBX) I always ordered a Test Desk (Badger was the company we used). I always stressed testing before dispatching repair folk. It usually saved time and aggravation. Having something to test to is an excellent idea.

If the line in question is provided to the subscriber via a Network Interface Device or "NID", (and by tariff, it must be,) then there already IS a "standard termination" within the circuitry of the NID. The standard termination is a half-ringer, as described above.

If not, the plain ol' modular interface block with the spring-loaded cover has what you're looking for. No need to buy one; they are on every ILEC phone man's truck.

Arthur, Bell Atlantic and GTE in these parts stopped providing half-ringers in NIDs back in the late 1980's. My guess is that it was due to the fact that the testing personnel didn't know what to do with them anyway, so why waste the money on them?
