I've done something similar, but not brave enough to use my finger. I just ground a jumper wire and run the block until I trip the ring. Bad thing is if there's something besides DT in there, well you know the rest. Won't really hurt anything unless there's a dedicated alarm circuit. If LEC doesn't label I figure the way I find the pair becomes their problem.
