When I used to install analog PBXs and test ground start trunks, I didn't bother using a 3rd lead (ground wire), I just set my butt set off hook and put one clip on Ring and the other to ground. That drew dial tone with just two leads. TelCo sent a ground on tip during the ring to prevent glare.
