Avaya IP Office celebrated its 20 year anniversary as a business phone system on May 13, 2022! What began as a minimally featured hybrid VoIP PBX to compete with the likes of the Nortel Network BCM has matured all the way to IPO Release 11. Along the way, Avaya purchased the business telephony portion of Nortel following their infamous 2008 bankruptcy.
IPO Techmasters
IP Office engineers and technicians from over the years recently met on Avaya Spaces to reminisce. Discussion centered around all the joys and pains of getting the product to where it is now. Fond memories of Techmaster conferences over the years such as Denver came to mind. Some participants (no fingers pointed) described various sorts of mayhem and hijinks!
Techmasters delved into many valuable training “Top Gun” sessions covering topics such as Voicemail Pro, IPOCC, and SSL security for IP Office Server Edition. The conferences were also a great time to network and bounce ideas off of other experts in the field. The knowledge and real world experience contained in a single conference center meeting room was usually over the top!
This expertise is in high demand as it’s been stated there have been around 700,000 IP Office system sold to date, serving somewhere in the neighborhood of 30,000,000 telephones Some of those telephones have now been migrated to the VoIP Cloud but nonetheless – that’s a lot of phones!
IPO Current Status
These days IP Office is one of the few on-premise KSU or PBX type systems to survive the evolution of VoIP, SIP trunks, etc. Many other models have been totally discontinued or are in the process of doing so such as:
- Nortel BCM/CICS/MICS
- Toshiba CTX/CIX
- Panasonic TDE/NCP
