my customer has an 824 with flash ll vm and voip lines from a company called birch. they come in the system as analog. they have trouble dropping calls during the call. when it drops the line arrow goes out. all calls are answered by the auto attendant and directed to the phones. is there a way to know if it is more likely the dialtone provider or the ksu or software. thanks, dave

Disconnect the line from the ksu try a couple of calls from a butt set and see if they drop. If they don't reconnect to the ksu and program the auto attendant to not answer and answer the call manually or try to make calls from the lines in question. It could be the provider, the ksu or the voice mail.

What sort of equipment is birch using? I had this problem with an adtran and some no-name provider. the adtran was miconfigured and I was lucky to get adtran to figure it out. the provider / clec was clueless.

I had a DR5 that was doing the same thing, but usually when calls were on hold. After months of finger pointing, we determined that the Verizon OPX circuits that appeared as CO lines on the 824 were super hot, as in voltages WAY above the usual 48 volts or so. When calls were on hold for a while, the hold bridge in the KSU got hot and would drop the call. Check your line voltages and I think you'll find your culprit. If it's more than 5-10 volts when off-hook, that's too much. Mike Sandman has gadgets that will compensate for out-of-range lines if you can't get Birch to do it correctly.
