I do not mind doing structured cable installations. It offers me the ability to be at a site all day or a few days and then, if the company decides on a phone system, could sell them a phone system at the same time.

I do not have the budget for these higher end application like accubid or intellibid if that is what they are called. Does anyone know or have excel spreadsheets that have client and subcontractor name and contact info. Bid amounts. Labor amounts and lots of other info such as line items and so on?

Second, since this is my first job for this electrican, What should I expect from him? Should he paid for the materials after they arive on site? He has also given me the option of installing just the jacks, wall plates ect and he pull the cable. I have counted 165 existing cat5 cable in the two story building. Cable runs between floors with the small basement floor having mabey 8 runs. Old cable needs to be removed "156" existing drops. Told him will used old cable to pull new cable though if I go that route. The site has existing racks with patch panels and jhooks. Only thing needing replacing is cable and jack ends/plates and perhaps new drops.

Thanks much smile

There are many free templates on the internet. Google "excel price quotes" or "excel construction quotes" ....or something like that. Just keep googling until you find one that you like.

15 yrs ago, I was pretty good in Excel and did all my estimates in it....but I haven't done that for a while since we switched over to QuickBooks back then. I had a database list that I had---then I could pull up items that I wanted. I was nice, but it took me a long time to set it up.

Not knowing anything about your work, making your job difficult and not paying on time if at all. I would get 50% up front, more if that doesn't cover your material and hard costs. At least that way if he screws you at the end you are not out anything but your labor. The fact that he suggested that he run the cable should be a red flag. Whatever you charge he can do it cheaper and it will never certify.

As for writing bids or proposals I have found that every job has it's own unique requirements. I write a general proposal in Word that I use as a template then add to and modify as each job dictates. I would never use Excel as there is no need for the math to calculate anything because you NEVER itemize. Just give them a description, number of drops and a bottom line.
