Magnetic field on door contacts gets too weak on steel doors. I have a steel main door and patio doors with strong steel frame. The contacts I'm testing are fairly small and when the magnetic part is directly applied (screwed) to the door, the magnetic field doesn't seem strong enough to close the circuit on the reed switch. I've seen spacers installed in commercial applications but I don't know if those spacers were for the same reason or was it because the door was too far away from the reed switch. The original contacts I installed many years ago were a bit larger but didn't seem to experience this problem. What can I do ? What are the spacers made of (lead or just plan plastic) ?

The only spacers I've used were plastic.
But they should help your situation with the metal door. You may have to use 2 or 3 but it won't hurt anything.
