Well, I have tried a near new 32C board today and it didn't make much difference. Next thing I am going to try is a new keypad. Hopefully it will do the trick.

It is definitely solid state. Chris, try moving the black handset wire to the same terminal as the yellow one just to see if the transmitter works. If that doesn't do anything, try putting the black handset wire on the same terminal with the green one and repeat. Changing out the dial in that thing is quite a chore that I wouldn't wish upon anyone unless absolutely necessary.

Ok. I'm making some progress but need a little more help.

I found out something interesting. I found out the replacement handset colors are different than a standard Western Electric handset. This is what I have now. I have the receiver on terminals 8 and 4 (black and yellow) and the transmitter on terminals 3 and 6 (red and green). It appears to be working correctly but now it is very quiet to listen to and people tell me I sound far away. I tried a genuine Western Electric handset off my model 500 and got the same results. Any ideas why it is quiet?

I discovered that the black and yellow on my new handset run the earpiece by putting a AA battery across the terminals and listening for the pop.

Thank you for all of your help. I figured it out and my phone is working now. I found out that the problem with it being real quiet was because the initial rate switch was set to zero. I bumped it up to a quarter and now everything works. I sound clear and can hear people through the receiver.

I feel like a toad for not having checked back in on your thread. I'm glad that you got it figured out. Thank you very much for keeping us abreast of your accomplishments. Your success will surely help others who may come here via a support search. Your due diligence will probably save someone else a lot of troubleshooting time in the future.

Please accept our welcome to hang around here and offer any assistance you can on CO switch issues. If you look around in our archives, we often have questions that the telco business offices leave equipment vendors and end-users wanting to 'lock and load'. It isn't until a switch tech comes up with that "magic phrase" that we need in order to get our problems solved.

You can also count upon getting a bit of experience with regard to CPE and get an occasional joke or topic for discussion along the way.

Feel free to drop me an email if you have questions on CO stuff. I am pretty good with AFC, Calix C-7, Adtran TA3000, 1148 and 1248 and some older carrier equipment (Seiscor, SLC series 5, etc). I used to know 5ESS pretty good and I know DMS-10 enough to keep it from crashing.

Has anyone got Docs for the 32A/B board, in particular the setting of rates?

Rates are controlled by the central office, not the phone itself.
