Yes the same rules apply for every VoIP solution. The solution is only as good as the route that it takes from one place to the other. If you are jsut sending it out onto the Internet then there is no guarantee's on when/how/if it's going to get there.

The options are up to you. Personally I would go with a iDCS100 R2 and IP network them. But like I said, it is a risk :-/

You want your office phone in the Vacation house to be different from the home system???
It would make more sense to have 2 systems connected with a gateway, through private network or VPN/VLAN.
Or just a single line gateway from the office system, (multitech), to any system at your house. You would be an intercom call from office, you could page office and use office lines. Usually easier to set up than some IP phones. Good results if using a high quality VPN/VLAN router at each location. Also, what you want in your house, Panny wise, would be TAW 848 or TDA 50.

I work out of my house, and my company’s headquarters is 2 hours away. They have an iDCS 500, and I have a Samsung IP phone in my home office. It is fantastic. The voice quality is great, and I can access all of the same phone features that anyone in the office can. I can also see the status of other lines/users.

I have Comcast internet (a business-class connection, 768k up/7meg down). Our main office has an SBC T1 (1.54meg). I can even be doing a fair amount of downloading on the internet and it doesn’t bother my phone quality at all.

I used to have a 512/512 SDSL line through ChoiceOne on my end, and it worked like crap. The latency between my house and my office was awful. Sometimes there was even a delay involved when pushing buttons on the phone, and a response from the phone system. If I used the SDSL line for anything else, it would kill my call quality.

We also have several other offices with iDCS 500’s, all offices are connected by T1 lines through a frame relay cloud. All of our iDCS 500’s are networked together. It works great.

My suggestion: Get a Samsung IP phone for your office. Get a regular phone line for your family, and get “distinctive ring” so each family has their own number. When someone calls their number, the ring pattern is distinctive so they’ll know the call is form them. No yelling around the house and no need for an intercom.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply.

Let me ask you something, how does the IP address situation?

Do you need a dedicated IP address for both the idcs 500 system and the individual IP phone(located in another state)

The iDCS 500 is in an office with a Data T1 and a block of 32 IP address.

The IP phone would be in a remote location using maybe Comcast which I believe only gives you 1 IP address. So I'm just curious on how the IP address situation works.

Thanks.

You will need two public IP addresses at the 500 location. As far as the IP keyset you can set that up as a DHCP and as long as there is a portal to the web it will search out the address of the 500. The two public IP addresses should port forward to the MCP2 and MGI cards respectively.
