Pretty much apprenticeship is the only way to go. You can get some training in classrooms, esp. after you have some knowledge. Most of us spend a LOT of personal time reading. And not Playboy or Time, or Outdoor Life.

Or even Time to read Playboy.

Does your current occupation require a licence?

Here are a couple Websites for more information:

Many of the larger wholesale distributors offer seminars on systems, either at their sites or via Webinars. You'd probably need to establish an account with one of them in order to take advantage of these, but it would be a good way for you to be introduced to the many products that are out there.

What do you consider "systems work"? Business phone systems? If so you will need to get a job with an interconnect and I would say with your background that shouldn't be too hard assuming you find one that is hiring. Then you want to get certified on whatever systems they handle. It's going to be a steep learning curve and the pay less than what you are making now.

What is the cisco training that all the job postings i see locally? I am not concerned about lower wages. I am just looking beyond and taking advantage of the tuition assistance while it still exists.

Like Ed said, there's a lot of 'free' training info at the various manufacturers websites. Webinars and youtube style presentations abound. Also, a LOT of product documention in regards to installation and repair can be found online...Google is your friend. Best bet, before you jump ship with ma bell, buddy up with a local mom and pop telecom outfit and try to do some part time work with them and learn alot. Also, I'm former ma bell'ish. You're probably covered by the union (CWA), big advice right here...utilize the Alliance program, utilize ALL training/certification help the union will give you BEFORE jumping ship.

My first day of work At N Y Telco, I was told, "You will love it here, you will hate it here, but you will never quit. NOBODY quits the phone company."

I interviewed for a white-collar telecommunications job in New York City during the Big Strike of 1971. The man interviewing me said "You will never get a better job, than right where you are. Stick it out, is my advice. NOBODY quits the phone company."

After 30 years, I can look back and say they were right.

True, Arthur, but I did get laid off twice from the phone company. From the same company, even (GTE).
