Hey,

We've got our own method of labeling wall plates and patch panels.

Currently we only use ICC products unless a customer requests otherwise.

We usually do our wall plates like this:

Let's say there's a data port and a voice port, one cat 5 one cat 3 cable. We label the data port DXX and the voice VXX, the XX number being the number coming off of the patch panel or the block for voice.

I know a lot of places use wiring schemes like floor, room, wall, jack, etc.

How do you guys do it?

What brand and type of label maker do you use?

It seems like doing it in an orderly fashion like by room number, etc would be a pain in the ass on the other end.

We use a P-touch

We use a P-touch too... I just think they look funky, and don't last over the years... I want to try a Brady IDpal.

We use the same color tape as what ever jacks we are putting in that way it looks nice, haven't had any fall off or come up missing yet.

I usally order my wall plates with the desi strip
and still use a P-Touch for the lable.
V-xx for voice and D-xx for data.
I go by our cable #s and punch down accordingly. D 1 to panel port 1 and so on.
For voice I start with cable 1 at the top of a 66 block and so on, 6 cables per side.

I use a P-touch with 3/8" black on clear tape because it shows less fingerprints and seems to do a neater job. If I am putting a fax or modem number on the jack I use 1/4" black on clear tape.

I also use the V-xx and D-xx scheme.

I have a customer that came out with a number scheme that was by floor and the nearest column then jack number and it became a mess because after it was done if you added any it was not with the original group on the patch panels or 66 blocks. An example of his stupid nubmers is 2A7D15A (floor 2 near column A7 data 15A). Keep in mind each port on the patch panel would have one of these 7 digit codes so the font was small to make it fit above the port on the patch panel. So if you have to find one on the patch panel end you could look for a while, even with a toner and probe. I even used a couple of adapters to use 2 toners on pairs 1 and 4 or sometimes I even had to use 4 toners and still could not find them in the mess.

I use a P-Touch unless the jacks have ID strips. Then I try to label them by hand on the desi or put a label above the keystone opening. If I am using regular plates, I put the label in the upper left corner.

I also made my own code up. In my shop, for example, one jack is M100A, going around the room up to M115A.
I label the patch panel with this code also.
Also, I label the jack with the number for voice or data (SL 1, Digital 1.1, data 2)
In smaller applications, with a few locations, I use just 1, 2, 3, 4 for voice and data. I did this in a friend's house where there are only 2 data jacks and 5 or 6 voice jacks.
I have never used the Brady labeler, it looks nice though. My only complaints with the P-Touch are the cost of the tape and the fact that mine always jams.
Oh yeah, don't ever label with tape and sharpies, they always get messed up.

Any body use premade labels? I know some companies make labels with a computer or telephone logo, and a number.

Would be quicker for standard uses.

I got some from Panduit. They were okay, but I really didn't use them.
