I've been complaining about my newly-adopted Dell Dimension 2400 series computer being very slow. I've done all of the usual fixes, patches, etc. The performance has been much better, but not good enough.
I finally opened it up and went to install another stick of memory but found that I had the wrong kind. While I was at it, I noticed that the original stick wasn't seated properly. I removed and reseated it, this time making sure that both latches were properly closed.
I swear that this thing is much faster now. Could it have been functioning with the memory not fully-seated (maybe running without all of the memory present)?

Ed, the BIOS will normally alert you that the amount of memory has changed when you restart the computer though. Did anything come up? Also do you still need the stick of RAM I have for you?

Nothing came up that I noticed, but it started up a LOT faster than usual.

I suppose it is possible. I've never seen that though. When I have seen RAM modules loose, the computer either a) didn't post, with beep codes, b) booted but immediately crashed, or c) intermittent crashes.

Go to the control panel, system, then under the general tap it should tell you how much RAM you have. So this should tell you whether or not a stick of your memory isn't being seen or not. Good Luck, I'm no CG by any means.

Might want to check out this site as well. It will scan your PC and tell you how much memory you have and how much your PC will hold.

To add to mdaniel's post, it will also link you to a purchase link for the correct RAM, which is usually reasonably priced. I have used crucial many times and carry the installer on my thumb drive. It takes all the guess work out of it... almost (almost) idiot proofs it. ---- Also, all new computers need RAM to POST. Older (very old) computers had a very, very small amount of built-in/on board memory that allowed POST without additional RAM.

Ed, it is entirely possibly, matter of fact it happened to me on my 2nd or 3rd computer. I got a new one from CompUSA in VA Beach, and before it left the store it was supposed to get another 128K RAM to make it 256K. When I got it home, I was looking over the system specs and what not, and noticed it only was displaying 128K RAM.
I took it to the NN Comp USA, and they told me the second RAM chip was improperly seated.
ETA: I see you are describing a single chip. In that case, I will fall back on this:
"With a computer, any problem is possible".

Ed, did you add any anti-virus software before it started being slow? A well-meaning friend of mine installed a program on my old Dell Dementia 2350 and it slowed to a crawl. It would happen randomly, as the anti-virus was scanning, I suppose. I removed the software, and now the old girl is humming right along.

Arthur is right. I installed McAfee on an older Win 2000 laptop and couldn't stand how slow it became. While it was scanning it was almost unuseable. I dumped that and installed AVG and it's much better.
