Would you happen to have a sidekick jeff? If so, are you getting any voltage? Have you tried kicking the pair at all? I find that really hard to believe, unless you have a short elsewhere, or you're shorting a pair or something.

Check for opens and shorts.

No, I don't have any testing gear except a toner and a buttset, I'm only 16 and a high school student. I just do cabling/telephone work for friends of mine and in my house, basically to learn how it all works and how to run my own small business.
Thanks for all the suggestions,
Jeff

Jeff, open one or two of the splices, clip on your toner with the switch in the middle,
(no tone, no continuity check)it should light if the line is live.
Is this a 25, 12, 6 or 4 pair? go up about a foot or so and start moving it and shake it around, see if that light goes out or even flickers.
it sounds like there might be an open or a short your picking up just by moving the cables.
Please say you did'nt use staples

everything is working now in this house, it is mostly 4 pair cable that I ran, only using the 1st pair for the one phone line.
All the cables toned out fine when I tested them last week.
