This may need to be someplace else, but. We were trying to set up a ring-trip example for training in the shop. We have no copper C.O. from lec, so we were trying to use an old Mitel analog SX200. We figured a 30 volt protector (what we use to protect out-of-building key phones) would do the trick. WRONG! Grounds all commoned and really tied to building ground, no help. It snubs the ring, but doesn't kill it. 6 VOLT, same story. It snubs the ring more, but doesn't trip the ring and tie up the line. So we tried it with panasonic KX-TD1232, same result. Same old story, imitating C.O. is NOT possible. Any ideas, anyone? John C.

Guys, maybe I'm not making myself clear. Sometimes when you call a C.O. line, you get 1 ring or even a partial ring then silence. You call back and the line is busy. So you wait 2-3 minutes and and it answers with silence again. Usually turns out to be bad equipment, sometimes C.O problem. This is what I'm trying to emulate/imitate. The Viking unit is not gonna be any more help than the Mitel SX200. John C.

John:

If I understand you correctly, you are trying to simulate a ring trip scenario. If so, you can try placing a very high resistance fault from the ring side of the test line to ground. You'll need to play with some resistors to simulate this situation. Remember that too low of a value will probably short out the line to ground and busy it out. Too high and the ringing voltage will likely fry the resistor. I have been able to simulate this situation with a simple toner connected between the ring side of the line and ground but turning it on to the continuity mode.

56-volt zener diode from tip to ring - doesn't affect on hook or off hook voltage, but conducts when the ring comes in.
