I love these things. I make a mountain of cash going to remove them and show the phone is fine.

The easiest way to eliminate having to use cord untangler devices is to place the phone on the desk so the user is answering the call with their non-writing hand. Then the user isn't switching the phone to their other hand to write something and twisting the handset.

Tale of (De)tanglers...

I work in a physicians' office and over the years I've maintained our Toshiba Strata XII system. About 10 years ago all of the pharmaceutical reps were dropping off detanglers (each stamped with the logo of the prescription drug they were selling). Very popular with our secretaries. Price savings = $3.99 ea. About 6 months later they all started to fail. "Hey! Why are the phones so scratchy?"

Being resourceful secretaries they recognized that the detanglers were at fault. Being considerate they did not want to bother me and they proceeded to remove the offending devices themselves. Not being telephone savvy they were unaware that the proper tool for removing the detangler was a paper clip poked into the release hole. Being VERY resourceful they pried off the detanglers by using a metal nail file.

Next day, "Hey! How come the cords keep flying out of the handsets"

Cost of repair = 3 new handsets! ("RJ9 modular jacks not sold separately")

Ya don't use paper clips . You use the metal clippy end of your spudger. We have a saying in our shop about keeping the Bi%#%es out of the Switches . Just Kidding

I cannot tell you how many phones we have "repaired" because of them. It sure makes the tech's job easy.

Never fails to amaze me how anyone allows their cord to get so badly tangled in the first place. The users that have these problems seem puzzeled about how it happens. As if they have no role in the matter. Then to let it get so bad that it looks like a ... well I don't know what, but we've all seen em.
Makes me wonder about the personality type that would let it get so bad that the phone comes off the desk when the user picks up the handset.

Richard, you may have some real valuable insight here. Psychologists could use this as some sort of test. I have plenty of customers whose cords tangle up routinely, but are powerless to change their behaviour!

Handset cords get tangled by people who switch the handset from ear to ear while talking.
