All,

Anyone know the answer to this question or roughly how much bandwith needed per VoIP call?
manufacturer, model number and relevant versions. Toshiba, CIX670, Equipment Version: AR5.20 MT055.00 remote sites CIX40 AR5.20 MT055.00

The G.711 Codec uses just under 90 Kbps each way per call with the default packet size. For easy math I just estimate 100 Kbps to be safe.
The G.729a uses about 20-30 Kbps depending on packet size.

Thanks for the fast reply. that is good news.
I have been fighting a choppy chat problem for a couple months now,
Pretty sure its not the Phone system, we have a meshed network with sonicwall routers at each site.
I am thinking the sonicwalls might be the cuase of my choppy chat "deadair" for 1 to 3 seconds AT my VoIP sites CIX40 .

Also consider the bandwidth involved.
We always use 2 circuits , one for each.

About 90% of the IT guys will tell you that their Network is great, they have plenty of bandwidth, and all the audio problems are coming from the PBX. Audio call issues are almost always the network connection. Sometimes in order to prove that the PBX is doing it's job we get stuck in a position to troubleshoot the customers network.

Personally I don't really care how fast their WAN connection is. Any network device (PCs, servers, Mobile phones, tablets, etc) will use as much bandwidth that it can use. Without any QOS policies on the router the PBX has to compete with all the other traffic going across, or possibly even competing with Internet traffic. Dead air to me means packets are being dropped, or excessively delayed.

Newtecky, you are 100% correct. I feel the same dead air to me means packets are being dropped, I have finaly proved they are and its not the toshiba phone system that is the problem - hoping to get the resolved soon. thanks for all the support on this site you all have have been very helpful.
