I've done this...
"On this adapter hook up the following colored wires coming from the RJ-45 end of adapter to the pin numbers on the DB-9 end: Green to pin 2 / yellow to pin 3 / red to pin 5 / and white to pin 8. Order a couple of these...there only a $1.50.. in case you "tweek" one of the connectors the first try. As you know you'll then plug it onto your comm port on your laptop and connect the 8-cond. to the RJ45 plug on the CPU on the system. You need to use Procomm..(hyperterminal comes up part way only) Settings: TVI-920/ 8-N-1/9600-baud/ direct connect-com port 1. ...with both units powered on..hit escape. Enter 'level 8' and your "in"!!"
I'm using a PC to connect since my laptop does not have a serial port.

I'm guessing your playing with an IDS 84?
I've seen those RJ45- DB9 adaptors have different pinouts depending on who manufactures them.

rj45 to db9
streight through patch cord from rj45 and in db 9 pin 2 is yellow
pin 3 is green
pin 5 is red
pin 9 is black
try this.
