I have a customer with an Avaya Psrtner R3.0.2 system who just purchased new digital 18D sets. He consistantly gets wrong numbers with the new set(s). I tried it myself and although the numbers appear in the display correctly when dialing, the numbers dialed are about 80% wrong, 20% correct. He has an old style 18D set nearby, and it works fine 100%.

I plan to swap out his new phones with new old--type sets.I checked with vendor and there are no known incompatability issues. Has anyone ever heard or experienced this?

Hello Daly City. I miss the Bay Area...

Funny thing is that I just ran across this problem yesterday. Brand spanking new PACS R7 with one employee (the owner, actually) complaining that he was getting a ton of misdialed calls.

I went onsite and witnessed it myself. I replaced the phone, the wiring and even created speed dial buttons for common numbers. Calls via speed dial failed as well. I know that the Partner doesn't "senderize" the digits, but they sure sound good and strong going out over the trunks.

I then used my buttset to dial from the customer's line and was able to reproduce the problem. It's NOT the PBX, but rather a call routing problem with the carrier. Cell phone service has been affected as well. It's so bad down here that I've had to force my cell phone away from ATT/Cingular to T-Mobile in order to complete calls.

BTW, the problem seems to be isolated to 1+ numbers. Local calling is OK. Toll free numbers in particular have been a problem.

Tim suggested the ideal would be to duplicate it and put a digit grabber in line if you have access to one

I saw a thread recently about what you where describing and several posted they had see the same issue and it was the phones

I'm thinking it might have been in the installers forum here

I've seen it when dialing on the speaker phone, mic turned on, boxy room with hard ceiling, no carpet, flat desk, etc.

Cupping your hand while dialing fed the DTMF from the speaker back to the mic. Double digits. Display of the set shows correct number, while a digit grabber shows the extra digits.

Dial with mic turned off, or on handset.

We have had this problem a lot with the series II 18-D euro's.
And in all of our cases it was a bad phone. I actually got it duplicate the problem while I was on site a couple of times.
What would happen is occasionally the phone would double dial a digit.
Like I said we have had oh...........30 or so in the last couple of years do this. And replacing the phone always cured the problem.

It sounds like Michael may have had the same situation that Tommy described-DTMF loop via spkr. This could be the case in my scenario as well. I will try using the handset for dialing and see what happens. I do know that the customer is using onhook dialing because I watched him. Thanks.

Here's some additional info applied to the DTMF feedback premise-
The old model phone works fine-maybe the mic or spkr is turned down or off.
Tried replacing the new set with several other new sets-they all do the same thing. Spkr is on all the way by default-I heard how loud it was and customer left it loud.

Would the DTMF feedback show the doubled digit? If this theory holds, it will not show on the display. (No extra digits show now when problem occurs.)

I'm anxious to try this on Monday. I 'll keep the board posted for future reference.

Sounds like you've gotten good advice. Apparently, I'm fighting a different problem. Should you ever find yourself in need of a "poor man's digit grabber", I've got a solution.

Rig yourself a surface-mount box to allow dialtone from a source to it's destination. Bridge an audio cord across the tip/ring and use as a mic input for your laptop. Watch the input level since the slight impedence match can easily distort your recording.

Use the old Windows soundrec.exe, Nero or other recording tool to capture the DTMF. Then browse to https://www.dialabc.com/sound/detect/ and upload the file. Following is a sample output from a Magix/virtual fax application that I did a couple of years ago (you Merlin folks will know what #01#817## is). Click the image for detail.

Output is a spectrum analysis followed by the trail of decoded digits with the make and break lengths of the tones.

You were right Tommy. The DTMF was feeding back through the speaker. I tried it with the handset and it worked OK. Then, turned mute button on. Good call, thanks!

I have had this same problem happen to 4 or 5 different customers. It has always been with a R7, never on an older release. In two of the cases I just had to install the 91K software patch and that solved the problem. At another site I was only having this problem on one phone. I replaced the phone three times and it kept happening so I finally replaced the processor and I haven't heard anything from them since. Sounds like there are multiple issues at work here.
