When I signed up for Internet service with Verizon, the company let subscribers create their own website and hosted it for them. I created a small website and all was right with the world. At some point, Verizon decided to stop offering the free service and suggested that users either pay or look for other providers. Verizon suggested webs.com. I rebuilt my small website on webs and the Verizon version disappeared. Last year, webs.com announced that it would be dropping free hosting later this year. Like Verizon, the options are to either pay or look elsewhere. I realize that companies have been utilizing Facebook as a quasi-website provider, but, as of late, I've been thinking about either scaling way back on Facebook/Instagram, or, dropping them completely. Are there any decent companies out there that still offer free hosting?

Do you mean hosting with something like [your name].wordpress.com ?
You can do quite a bit with the free wordpress.com stuff, but you end up as a subdomain of wordpress.com. I think Wix.com also has this available.
I've done a little bit of Wordpress with a couple domains I have, and use the wordpress that you can load from a web hosting company. You pay for the domain name and the hosting in my case.

That's right. My existing website has the ".webs' subdomain. Not a problem at all. Just looking for a new spot to call my own. With webs.com and Verizon dropping free hosting, I'm wondering if it is only a matter if time before others follow suit.

I've seen ads recently from Wix. I used them once quite a while ago while playing around. Wordpress.com is the other big one. Perhaps the big ones have enough ad revenue so they won't start charging?
Good luck.

I use WIX for our church website. The free version is pretty powerful and does display adds and you have the wix domain included in your address. However, they are relatively cheap for what they provide. We went with a paid option and got a domain registered through GoDaddy. Have been pleased. And it lets us drop in lots of extras such as YouTube videos, spreadsheets, maps, etc. Plays really well with Google accounts.

I created a WordPress account. It will be a while before I start to work on the site due to my left shoulder is stiffened/frozen up.

Plays really well with Google accounts. Nothing worse than a website that doesn't work cross-platform.

With a frozen/stiff left shoulder, I'm like a 1 arm bandit....only my payout isn't quite so good.
