Wondering if anyone had recommendations on T-1/PRI testers. We are running into more issues with sites and it is difficult to get the CLEC and ILEC to fix in a timely manner (finger pointing). Meanwhile customers are upset and we are stuck in the middle. I have looked at the GL Communications unit (nice feature: it is an external box with card that goes into laptop) and the Acterna 2209 units (I see these units being used by CLECS) Most of the time we can look at the smartjack and see errors on the cable pairs (LP lights blink, etc) but at times there are dropped calls, echo, locked channels etc. where the T-1 is not down just acting strange that makes it hard to determine where problem lies (ILEC/CLEC/PBX) Thanks

Although expensive I always liked the T-berd with the channel break out, that way you can check the T-1 and if needed channel signalling. I've only used a couple others and like the T-berd best. Bill

Got one myself and I never use the damn thing anymore unless I plan on billing the telco for my time or are interfacing with a piece of equipment. Everything you need to kmopw anymore is built into the switches and the signaling. Just looking at the smart jack tells you everything you need to know most of the time. I especially love going and looking at the smart jack when the SBC wise asses tell me everything is fine and it's the PBX then I tell them, you do know your smartjack is still looped up don't you?

Bill is right, get a T-Berd. It's not that we should have to tell the CO that the line coding has changed, or we are receiving bit errors. As we all know when they test, everything looks good, except the CPE. I have found that they customer will gladly pay the service charge for testing if it results in a quicker resolution to the trouble.

OK now don't everyone laugh but I use a 50 cent rj45 wired in loopback!! Also carry a db15 loopback. Both have served me well over the years.

Agree with jwooten, I have also used this loopback method in a pinch.

First of all I can barely spell PRI, but we have started installing them over this year. What would a tester let me "look" at? I'm inclined to use the loopback, but I presume that will just tell me whether the circuit is good to the smartjack. What do you do for those issues where it's not an up or down issue but rather small quirks occuring. Out of the handful I've done I only have one occasional problem with a DID ringing the wrong hunt group. What tester would be best to really disect what is going on?
