I'm running Windows 7 RC7100 64-bit (7600 is the production version) and I like it. It's stable, works smoothly, recognizes all 8-gigs of memory, has driver support for all my stuff, etc. I run all the same applications as I do on XP without a single problem. The networking stack has been vastly improved. File transfers actually use the whole pipe as compared to Win XP.

I will probably weasel a copy of it from the Microsoft shop I do work for. I do like the look/feel of the ultimate version and really like how all my stuff works without any hassles.

What is going to be the pro or business version of Windows 7? I just ordered 4 new computers with Vista Business the other day and I'm still not clear on what Windows 7 is going to mean to this client.

I had the option of going with XP Pro or Vista Business and as bad as I hate Vista I recommended we go with it for one reason, (and one reason only)
the medical software he uses is going to design their upgrades with the most recent operating system in mind.

No plans to change. I'm running XP Pro on my laptop and it is solid. I have several extra PC's with XP pro and a few with Server 2003. No reason for me to change anything.
At school most of the labs run Vista but offices still have XP. They just put Office 07 on the XP machines and I hate it!

I'm sticking with XP. I have no reason whatsoever to change.

My son is a senior in the IT program at FSU saw Win7 in preview and says it is great.

Personally, I don't need the aggravation.

One note - I understand that you cannot upgrade from XP to Win7. So, that means that you must first upgrade to Vista and then to Win7?

I haven't heard that but I would guess it will be similar to upgrading back in the Windows 98 days when you had to insert the disks from your original OS to prove you purchased the OS you are upgrading from.

That might be kind of hard considering XP was most likely pre-installed when we bought the PC's for at least a lot of us.

The upgrade thing simply means you have to do a new install. Whenever your installing an operating system its best to do a new install and not an upgrade. You can go from XP to 7 via the new install path.

I'll be advising all my clients to begin planning for the upgrade in the spring of 2010. W7 is a whole lot better than Vista from many points of view, but spcially a management view. Plus for bigger offices the Enterprise version has superior security features and security profile options. Buying OLA with SA over a 3 year payment plan will save customers a lot of money. I don't expect to actually be doing any upgrades until probably next Fall just because everyone is very tight on cash.

Of course most people will hang with XP and refuse to change until they are forced to...and since in MOST cases you cannot buy a Windows based PC with XP anymore.

You can still buy the HP Business line with XP installed and a Vista license included. There are sources for XP OEM kits if you want to build your own boxes.
