We have a project for school where we need to spec out everything for small, medium, and large networks. Try finding a new computer without Vista! Well actually Dell Optiplex still comes with XP...

I too just got a new Dell with Vista. No problems with the machine, other than half my programs aren't compatible. I can't use Clone CD, Clone DVD, or Ghost....
I had to upgrade Quickbooks too, which was my fault for not checking... but thats how software makers get their money..they only make products that last so long...Thats just the way it goes...and it will always be like that...regardless of who makes it. The days of buying a piece of software and using it forever are long gone I am afraid. And before you complain too much, think of our own business. Most of us won't touch systems with software that is out of date, or systems that are out of date.
On the flip side, the new interface is nice, although a bit to get used too. I will probably keep one machine with XP on it so I can run my clone software and such, but i will be moving my laptop over to Vista as well. One key point about Vista, check the software manufactors web site to make sure it is Vista compatable. That is where you will run into issues.
The reason I bought a Dell is because I was tired of having issues with my home built. Dell sells 40,000 machines a week, so your bound to have a few issues, but all in all, I have had tremendous luck with them. I also buy the next day on site warranty for two years on a desktop, three years on a laptop. If anything breaks, they come out the next day to fix it.
If you own a Dell, and you want to go back to XP, PM me.
ps-my Core Due runs cirlces around my old AMD. If your going to buy a new machine, get an Intel, not an AMD, and spring for the one with 4 megs Cache, the 6600 or above. Also, minimum 2 gigs of RAM....This thing runs Photoshop and some other programs really well...

so far so good...but there are a few quirks to deal with. I kind of expected that. If you do Vista, make sure you get the updates, and if you have issues, do a google search for it, and there are some fixes to them. I had to disable a feature in Roxio, and Firefox seems to give it some issues as well, but I did an update, and so far the issues have not returned.

The crashing is due to the dual core and applications that aren't written for dual core mode. The way to fix this is to utilize something called CPU affinity. You can pin applications to particular processors as needed by using Vista Taskmanager.
Vista works very very well if you know how to fix it to work with applications that weren't written for it.
Good luck to you.
