The DSX has a lot of "bang for the buck" but there are things that could make it better.
One of the basic functions that the DSX does not have that it's SOHO competitors have was brought up in another thread before. The new release has a lot of nice "fancies" but what about the basics?
At least three automatic timers (day, night, lunch) with a manual override option.
Another nice add would be more analog ports as standard. As there are no hybrid ports, either (on the 40) four analog ports instead of two as the basic configuration (not an add-on card at extra cost) or a 4 port analog card as standard (in the 80). (Fax, Credit Card, SLP analog cordless telephone).
Anyone have any other wishes?
Bill, any thoughts on any chances of anything like this happening soon?

KEN Ive never monkeyed with the DSX,but your suggestions seem rather solid and practicable. Are you aware of the DSX Dealer forum ? If you are, it seems like a good place to post this information. They have a FEATURE ENHANCEMENTS CATEGORY. I am not trying to pull you away from this site, but was curious if you know about that site?

seems like very little activity at the DSX site
I think its a case of keeping features off the system sold to anyone while the dealer only is more feature rich .
look at the onyx vs ds01 etc.

Good point skip, onyx vs ds01. I guess it all goes back to dealer vs non dealer product.

He frequents both of the sites, so it's fair to say that here will work just as well as the DSX forums.

Did I here someone call my name?
Ken, We hear you about the automatic timers. We would have liked to get into the new software (2.0), but there wasn't enough time to do it right. We'll have it in the next version. (Please don't ask me when.) Regarding the analog ports, we will not be making any changes. We are targeting a higher-end residential market that can afford all digital sets.
Skip, We do have a distinct market for the DSX. However, other than system size, we do not intentionally limit the feature set. In fact, there are some things this system can do that the dealer products cannot. Expect some really cool stuff in the months and years ahead.

Add a spot to name the DAT tables and Routing boxes, make it much easier to get a grasp (or refresh your brain) of whats going on when remote pgm. And have the timers follow the PBX (day, nite, lunch ) etc. Better cordless, it blows bad JU Ju!

Thanks, Bill.
You are aiming at the upper end residential....out here in my market that is far and few between. Besides, I do not do residential. My bread and butter is the small office (3-8 lines, 3-20 sets). Every office has a fax, cc, and use analog single line cordless sets.
That is why I seldom use the 40, the 80 with the analog card, while not the cheapest way to go, has more possibilities. But that is the better fit in my market.....maybe not the residential.
Keep up the good work, keep the basics coming, and the "flash and glitter" will help the salesmen make their quotas !!!!
Thanks for a good switch / system for the small guy.

I get lots of praise from our small business customers regarding the DSX. It's a nice looking system with a lot of bang for the buck. Having those auto timers would be great addition.

Ken,
Sorry to hear that you don't use the DSX-40. It was designed for the small business applications you have built your business on. We have many satisfied installers selling this product to small businesses.
Would a 4-port version of the 8SLIU card help your situation?

Bill, the stocking of the two different systems and parts is the problem. I have one (40) on the van for an installation next week. That will be either the third or fourth since they came out. These only go to local customers with no growth potential. I still like the flexibility of the 80 over the 40 for the average user in my market. I stock the 80 and plenty of sets and cards. One does all . I am bidding two 80s this coming week, a car dealer and an out-of-town insurance office....because of the modem. Both are growth customers with several (more than 2) analog requirements. Keep up the good work. That 4 port suggestion might be an idea......

What I really need is the ability to extension dial out of a personal voicemail box. Or at least a semblance thereof.

I could think of two things could stand to be changed:
1. Turn Caller ID on the lines by default.
2. Turn the Caller ID alert lamp off by default. Just got done with another install this week, and every customer I've installed one of these in asks to have it turned off.
3. The setup for caller ID callback seems more complicated than I would think it should be. Can't you just go to a different menu and select which digits to dial?

Jordon, I didn't like the way the Caller ID lamp worked as well, so we changed the operation in version 2.0. When any phone is active after a new call is logged, it will turn off the light. That way you can see that you have new Caller ID, but as soon as you use the phone (even just lifting the handset) the light will go off. This also works with group Caller ID. When any phone in the group is active, the light will go off for all other members of the group.

DD, is that because the systems need to be exactly the same for an import to be successful? (We do a lot more 80's and 160's than 40's right now, though we have a few 40's on the schedule.)

DD,
One Option I would like to see is a different Answer table for day and night option. This would help the manual overide opition.

DSX Deus,
I'm trying to dial another extension from inside a personal voicemail box. Dial 0 seems to be the only option that works.

I assume your in your mailbox checking messages and want to dial a coworker. If so, dial 9 to exit your mailbox and * to get to the AA. From there you can dial an ext. directly (using the default DAT entry for digit 3, UTRF XXX).

Close, but not quite. In this most recent case the owner has two extensions. When a caller gets his primary greeting, he wants to put in an option for the caller to try him at his other extension by dialing it right out of his voicemail.

Why not put both extensions in a ring group and use group voice mail. That way he only has one mailbox and both phones will ring when someone calls.

We'll be doing either that, or using forwarding, but if his extension is direct dialed it will bypass the group. Extension dialing out of voicemail is just nice on many levels and would be an excellent addition in my opinion. I have come across many, many requests for situations where it would fit the customer's need the best.

No problem, the system can already do exactly what you want. The key is to use the Dialing Options feature. Here's what to do:
1) Enable Dialing Option in 2144-03 (2214-03 for Ring Group mailboxes). 2) Select the next CRMB in 2144-04 (2214-04 for Ring Group mailboxes). 3) Select a DAT for the CRMB in 4222-01. 4) Add an entry for digit 3 as UTRF XXX (and digit 4 as UTRF XXX for 4XX extensions.) in 4231.
When the caller gets the mailbox greeting, they will be able to dial anything in the DAT. In this example, transfer to the extension by just dialing the 3 digits. You could also enter the extension directly in the DAT (i.e. UTRF 305 for example) and then they can transfer by just dialing one digit.

Used the modem a few times in the past couple of days. It saves alot of time, especially the first couple of days after an install when the customer is feeling out the system and may want to make some tweeks, which is exactly what happened this week.

Still trying to determine why I can't modem into that one, but I connected them to their network and it does just as well.
One thing that has happened a couple of times is I get a customer calling me that their phone doesn't work and the problem ends up being that the cover is making the button stick. Anyone else run into this?

the cover is making the button stick
Only if it's not popped down all the way. I had that happen just yesterday. Pushed the cover down securely and it was fine.
