So, I need to find the right phone line tech @ AT&T that can do this, or we would have to go to a T1 for phone service (not likely)? And, yes, she had a babe voice, very pleasant to talk to.

Well they are friggin wrong, you musta been talin to the customers service babe in the call center, they know very little about how things actually work. WELL THIS IS TRUE AND NOT TRUE, WITH A PRI THE CARRIER HAS A FEW OPTIONS, THEY CAN OVERRIDE WHATEVER YOU SEND THEM AND JUST SEND OUT WHAT THEY WANT LIKE A MAIN TN. THEY CAN PASS ALONG WHATEVER NUMBER YOU SEND THEM ALLOWING YOU TO SEND OUT DIFFERENT CNAM INFO PER DID, OR THEY CAN PASS WHAT YOU SEND THEM AND IF NOTHING IS RECEIVED DEFAULT TO A MAIN TN. SO IT IS TRUE YOUR PBX CAN CONTROL THE CNAM INFO BUT IF YOU JUST WANT 1 NUMBER TO BE DISPLAYED THEN THE CARRIER CAN DO THAT.
I Swear I did not touch anything

How dare you second guess your elders! Just kiddin
The truth is we are both correct. I based my info knowing that the ESI 20 does not have PRI capability and thus the info from the call center babe was wrong.

so, once we get an S-class or CS50, our installer can configure it to "tell" the CO the phone number we want on outgoing calls, and the CO can either do it or not. I get it.

The 50 series is the replacement to the s-class. The s-class is no longer in production
I would recommend the ESI 50L (lite). This will save you a little money as compared to the 50 (full version). You can "software upgrade the 50L to a 50 if you need to use the VOIP feature, T1, or true ACD in the future. You can also use your existing 24 button phones with 50L and 50.

Gene's IVX 20 uses the 16 key feature phones, which are not "officially" supported on the Comm Servers. That said, the only problems I've ever had using the 16-key's is taht they won't store the button programming when a backup/restore is done. Also, if they do keep the 16-key's and have been using the hold key for regular hold, they will have to switch back to using the park key, since the Comm servers are not "'park key' aware"
