I installed an STSe Vodavi phone system 1 1/2 years ago. They called me 2 days ago saying they are experiencing problems. Phones will automatically come on, will automatically intercom another ext, dial tone will come on over the speakerphone, all of this without touching the phone. We went to customers site, replaced KSU with a new one to test, same thing happened. No one had done any work in the suite and no one had been in the false ceiling. Replaced old 25 pair cat3 cable with new Cat5e, still have problem, ran cat 6 to one station, still have problem, installed UPS,tech support says sound environmental. HELP... Thinking about running extension cord to another power outlet. Several telephone people along with an electrician says it sounds like a power issue. I would appreciate any ideas if you have ever experienced anything like this. Thanks Terry

Went back to customer site, they said phones that were on the Cat6 cable had been pretty quiet. Ran all new Cat 6 to stations installed Triplett UPS. Seemed good when we left. Having dinner when doctor emailed me a picture of the phones all lit up and everyone had gone home. Told him he needs to get the power company out or an electrician to check out power in building. He agreed. Driving me nuts. I'll keep you posted. Terry
Is anyone bringing in their laptop or other device that is searching for WAP?
Any new or worked-on transmitters within 1/2 mile?
And for the Paranoid; has anyone done a search for 'bugs', as in industrial espionage? (just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean you aren't being watched )

I have to agree along the lines of what John just said. We had one with an almost identical situation and we did many of the things that you did. It was only after months of head scratching that we discovered that there was a radio repair shop down the street and they did a lot of transmitter testing at high power.
Once we made the connection and got in touch with the radio people, we scheduled a test and had them key some very high-power transmitters on demand. Voila, the phones would go nuts every time.
The problem never really went away until the customer moved to a new building (for different reasons, of course).
Years ago I had a system less than a 1/4 mile from an AM radio station. They would from time to time crank up the power and the telephone system would go nuts, also when they would switch their power output (sunrise and sunset)it would cause problems. You can try to use sheilded cable and ferite beads also make sure the KSU is well grounded. If it is a RF problem caused by someone putting in a new transmitter near by you can contact the FCC and may be able to get them to shut them down or make adjustments to their equipment so it doesn't cause problems.
The phone system that is affected is on top of a parking garage and right behind a large hospital. I will have the doctor check with the hospital to see if maybe over that weekend they installed something that might be causing the interference. They are still having some of the same random issues but don't seem as bad since we recabled with Cat6. No other doctors office in the building has complained about any problems with their phone systems that I'm aware of. Could it be possible that the installation of any equipment could only affect my customer? This is a real head scratcher. Thanks for all of your feedback. Terry db Voice & Data, Inc.
