Hi all,
I have 128 cpu inter-tel system using DB studio v6.0.
I have a voice processing pc set up. The pc is install with Vpu application; watchdog configuration utility, avdap utility, printer utility, and Rhetorex. I don't believe we are using this PC for anything; however the pc is connected directly to our phone system through a serial cable. We already have another pc set up with CT gateway and switch transceiver application; both of these application are use to communicate with the attendant console and manage a connection to and from our sister company. So, what is the purpose of this computer that is set up with Vpu? Any information will be helpful.
Thanks.

It's the voicemail system. It handles all the voicemail boxes, holds the recordings and handles the call processing menus such as Press 2 for Sales, Press 3 for Accounting, etc.

Thanks MacGyver for responding.
That's what I thought it was used for, but when I browse through the PC. I saw no application or configuration be apply to communicate with the inter-tel unit beside a serial cable connected to one of the CPU rs232 port. What application is this VPU PC should be running and how do I verify if the PC is exactly being used? Base on the analysis, the PC is not being utilize.
Thanks.

There should be a modtap adapter plugged into the serial port on the computer. Then a phone cable plugged into the modtap at one end and the Axxess cabinet at the other. The data runs back and forth across that cable and that is the actual serial cable. You sould also have a round cable that is not a serial cable but may resemble one. On the cabinet end it will have a proprietary connector that locks to the cabinet. As I recall it's a 15 pin cable. The voice runs across that cable.
If you have any voice mail, if you can dial into a box, or get voice prompts that machine is running. From the programming computer launch DB Studio and you'll be able to browse the Axxessory Talk computer as well. If you want to run an application straight from the Axxessory Talk computer itself, go into the Start Menu and look for AvdapMon. That will show you what is going on in the processor as it happens.
Just as an FYI, anything more than that and you're really venturing into dangerous territory if you're not familiar with the system.

Hi MacGyver,
I have a technical background in IT and I want to set up backup PC for this Voicemail box. What steps should I take?
So far, I know I need a PC running Windows NT, DB9 serial port, and a 15 pin serial PCI card. I believe I need to install Axxessory Talk on the PC.
Do I need a specific 15 serial card or can I use any brand of card? What other programs do I need to install? Also, how can I transfer the current voice database to the new PC? Do I do the transfer by using DB studio?
Sorry, for asking a lot question. But any information will help.
Thank you.

The replacement unit will need to have ISA slots. The rhetorix boards and AIC are both ISA type boards. You will need to install the voicemail (AVDAP)software and then copy over the DB. We find removing the HD from the original machine and slaving it into the new machine and then copying the files over is the easiest way. DB Studio will not help you with this.

Drew_ryan,thanks for responding.
Do I have to use a rhetorix boards? What does AIC stands for? I tried backing up the voicemail database, but everytime I try it prompts me to back up the db to an A:\ drive. How can I back the Voice data to a different location? Also, what's the default path to voicemail db folder.
Thank you.

Jeff,
The PC is old and I'm afraid it will fail soon, so I need a back up.
Thank you.
