When carpet installed upstairs, downstairs service stopped.
Main line is wired, yb outside rings /works up

sounds like the carpet guys cut a wire when they were trimming the carpet. Each of your lines uses 1 pair. Pair 1 is typically the red and green wires and pair 2 is the yellow and black wires. Match them up with with the appropriate pins on the jack. You actually have your lines one and two reversed, which is no big deal if you which is which. Since it sounds like the telephone cable was exposed in the first place, maybe running along a baseboard or something, you might be able to locate where it was cut and repair it. Otherwise, sounds like you will need to run some new cable from the Dmarc(box)to the downstairs.

It could also be a tack through 2 wires, your better off running a new cable. [Linked Image from sundance-communications.com]
But good luck either way.
