Hi,

can someone please explain the difference between the UGW and IPG cards in the IPX500s.

Also, can a Quintum Tenor AXE2400 communicate with a IPX500?

Thanks in advance.

Here's the deal. The IPG was Tadiran making the older systems able to network via VOIP over their Qsig network, quite an accomplishment considering version 9.xx system were running in the mid 90's and you are able to do IP without a software upgrade..pretty sweet. These cards worked quite well and in fact are still being used today. IPG and UGW are not capatable with ea other. The UGW and the PUGW (newer) are the way to go as the PUGW supports sip functions under version 15. There are many forms of communicating...what is the non IPX500 system capable of networking with? SIP trunking? QSIG? T1? E&M tie lines? FXO/FXS?

Thanks for your reply!!

We have 2 IPX500s with UGW cards. Currently they are configured with 30 trunk lines running between them. Most of our phones hang off 2 Fujitsu Essence 600s with a Tlink between them (5 km apart). One Essence is linked to one IPX500 via 30 tie lines.

We want to retire one of the Essences and move to FlexsetIP handsets. And we're looking at hooking an AXE2400 to the other Essence to have it communicate with the IPX500s.

This is the product. Quintum Tenor AX
As per the manual;
"The Tenor AX integrates a gateway, gatekeeper, border element, intelligent call routing, and supports
H.323/SIP and QoS all in one solution."

Do you think it will work?

Are you hanging IP phones off one of the IPX 500's? I would suggest looking into an IPX office at that site for fallback. Routers...doesn't really matter so long as you can support QOS or some sort of voice prioritization. I would also suggest getting POE switches.

The plan is to hang IP phones off both the IPX500s. And we're getting POE switches. Routers are good.

Now that i read my description of the AX, it seems a little sketchy. The Tenors are a PCM/VOIP converter. The one we're looking at has 24FXS/2FXO ports. We're going to hook this to the Essence via a 50pin Telco connector and to the LAN with the intent that it will convert the calls from the Essence to IP and send them to one of the 2 IPX500s. And vice/versa.

We currently run G.729A compression on our trucks between the IPX500s. I'm not sure whether we'll run this on our VOIP phones or just G711. The Tenor also supports both these algorithms.

I guess i'm really just wondering if there is anything brand-specific regarding VOIP? Or is it all standard's based and most things should talk happily?

I hope my descriptions are clear. I'm tradionally an IT network technician, so i'm still learning the world of phones. laugh

Thanks again!

Standard..heh there is a word. I would definately call Tadiran about it before buying it. I do know they have a 3rd party make FXO/FXS boxes. If you want to run modems and faxes between the sites on analog you will need to run g711.

No worries.

Just one other question. I've read that if you change some details regarding IP phone ports, the IPX500 will reset the network card and port information. When does this actually occur and what's deleted?

The only time the UGW resets is when you change the UGW settings. Phones don't do it.

Just to clarify.

A 'reset' is just a reboot. It doesn't clear any ports or settings.
