I believe this is a 501 ksu, but there are no markings on it. Possibly made by ITT? It had both ITT 400E and San/Bar 4000 line cards in it.

The photo was taken with a cell phone camera, so it's not the best.

It looks like an ITT to me. The WE ones had a cast aluminum base and rack while the ITT units had a base and rack made of the yellowish steel.

But didn't the ITT 501 have a large power supply residing in the lower portion? Is the cover for it still around? Beige was usually ITT or Stromberg. Gray was usually WE. I don't remember the others. There were several. Those 1A2 parts were so universal.

There were many options with the 501, some available factory-installed and others that were field-installed, like power supplies, intercoms, etc. In this case, I think someone stole the power supply out of the bottom rack space.

Thanks Ed. The power supply was mounted above this ksu on the wall. I'll see if I can snap a photo and post it.

Most of the stuff here is/was WE, but in the early 1980's there was some ITT equipment installed. The cover is long gone, but as I recall they power supply doesn't have any manufacturer markings on it either.

As you can see from this photo they pretty much use the "abandon in place" method for any of the old or decommissioned telecom equipment. There are very few people left here who know what this stuff is, so they just leave it alone.

ITT used Elgin or Lorraine power supplies in their KSUs.

You know...looking at this "old technology" it is pretty amazing what this country was once capable of from a manufacturing perspective. If you look at the WE gear it was as close to bulletproof as you can get. The other stuff (like this ITT unit) was good quality, but not nearly as indestructible. Maybe it didn't have to be.

Fast forward to today and look at all the junk that we import from China. It doesn't even come close. I sound like an old man, don't I?

Yes, you do. A very, very wise old man. Now if only we get the villagers to listen... smile
