Hi all,
We have a customer that will be doing a lot of excavating in an area where their existing in-house CATV service runs. So, we need to temporarily re-route overhead.

The temporary span will cross a private street - however the contractor wants the wire high enough so that a dump truck with raised bed can pass below. He has specified 30' high. On one end we have a three-story apartment building - plenty high. On the other end we have a twelve-foot fairly sturdy lamp post which is owned by the customer.

Our initial thought is to strap a 30' piece of 1.5" IMC to the post with one guy wire that runs directly opposite of our drop cable direction. The actual overhead cable will be RG6 drop - so no more than 50 lbs total weight. But add ice and wind...

One other option is to make a 30' high tripod out of IMC. Unfortunately, crossing the road elsewhere would require that we re-work the entire existing underground distribution...

Comments?
Thanks!
Mike

Don't know what size dump truck he has, but 30 feet? Requirement on urban street crossing is 18 feet at it's lowest point. I think I'd have him raise his box and take a measurement, I'd be surprised if it's much more that 12 to 15 feet. What is your span length? I'd be a bit leery about attaching to a customers lamp post, no matter how sturdy I thought it was. Surely you can find a pole to borrow for something like this.

Spoke with another customer who is a quarry operation - they say 25' for a truck in mid-dump to clear. Span is only 65 feet long. The service will be in place for 30 days or so. Customer wants this to be as unobtrusive as possible - but we can't attach to an existing house nor to a tree (which would be marginal anyway)...

I second Bill's idea for a pole for safety reasons. If a dump truck were to catch that cable, I'd think it would snap it off (30' of pipe makes for some nice leverage) and then you would have a 30' pipe falling to the ground and hitting anyone in the way. Same goes for the tower, would probably pull over before the cable snapped. If this wasn't a construction area I'd say go for the tower.
