I am new to the board and fairly new to the communications field. I worked network communications in the army for 6 years and spent some time as a switch tech but this is much different. I am now an I&R tech and I'm struggling on some of my jobs. I know the color codes, some telephone theories, and much of the basics but i was wondering if there are any sites or courses I could look into that would increase my knowledge. Perhaps a frequent trouble/resolution site or something of that nature. Example: today I had a ticket where the customer's phone signal would be lost in the middle of a call. sometimes 5 min into it, sometimes 30 min. I checked all connections, switched the field pair, ran a new jumper, tested everything, rewired the feeder jack, and even sat there listening to dial tone for 10 min. He calls in an hour later saying it's still doing it. Any help on this or any other general help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Could be his phone. Did you try ruling that out?

1st thing I asked but he has 2 phones (only 1 is a cordless) and he say's they're both doing it. I have to go back out there in the morning and I'm running out of possible solutions. It's hard to fix a problem you can't see.
btw as a newbie, sometimes that motto is the only thing that gets me dial tone lol

Are you sure he isn't calling someone on a cell phone or it's another (single) number he's calling that the problem is on the other end?

I'm not sure what test equipment you or your CO's have (Dial Off Battery or DATU) but I would be doing some testing with an ohm meter or a Dynatel. With the battery off the line, short and ground the pair at the CO. the resistance on both sides of the pair should be almost identical. I have found it easier to monitor an anolog ohm meter(Tripplet 310) than the Dynatel. If you have ANY change, you could have a high resistance open. Has the customer complained of static?

I have a Dynatel 745 that i'm just getting to know. I got a refurbished one from the company the other day. it didn't come with any manuals or anything so I'm still learning it. Not sure what they're using on the co side, all they every do is send me shorts but the test results on the ticket said their test came back good. they sent another tech out to that job because I was on another ticket. Not sure if the problem got resolved but I'm still interested in all the responses I'm getting. I'm sure this isn't the last time i'll come across something like this. Also, are there any good sites or books on theories and troubleshooting? All i keep finding are the basic in-home repairs. Thank you all for your assistance

High resistance short can be cause by damp cable, insulation burn on cable pairs and is usually found in the plant. High resistance open is any connector not making good contact, that is why you'd want to use a voltmeter to test as any battery applied would fix the problem for awhile, would think the loop current on the pair would rule this out unless the ringing current is temporarily fixing your problem.

The best way to check for a high resistance open is to have someone at the far end (C0)put a ground on both tip and ring of the pair with battery removed. Look at both sides with a volt ohm meter and make sure tip and ring are exactly the same resistance to ground. As justbill suggested be sure there is no battery on the pair or it can temporarily fix the problem and cause you a repeat visit.
