Thank you in advance for your time.
I have a DCS 12B system with 16 different extensions. One phone is broken and I want to move an unused phone to that extension. From what I understand each phone is programmed for the particular extension and when one is moved it needs to be reprogramed for that extension.
Can someone tell me how to do this? Everything I have read seems to be incorrect. I have some programming manuals but when I try different codes nothing seems to work. The only difference on the phones is the extention number. All phones are programmed with the same numbers and keys.
When I plug in the new phone to the existing extension the extension number shows on the screen but none of the keys work and I can only get one line to open up out of six lines.
Any help is greatly appreciated as I am about to pull all of my hair out. I am sure it is something simple that I am missing and just overthinking the problem.
Have a great day!

Ramona,The extension number is determined by the jack(port) not the telephone. If you are swapping the same type of phone (12 button for 12 button) then you would have no problem doing this.If you are trying to swap different phone types ie 24 button for 12 button then the extension will "default" the key programming to programming for that type of phone.

Thank you for your quick reply. I am changing out the phones only and they are the same 12 button. Any time we move a phone we usually have a "guy" come out and do it for us because they said the phone is programmed for that port (extension). In the past when we moved a phone and plugged it in, it would be "dead" until the guy came out. This time, I plugged it in and the extension number shows on the screen but none of the lines work correctly.
Maybe the guy programmed them that way so we would have to call him?
Any suggestions that may help?
Thanks again!

Ramona, many phone systems work that way when you move phones and Samsung is one of them. If there is a difference in the phones being swapped it will start from factory default again. You can ask your installer to program a default for your system based on the keys that are the same on everyones phone. The lesson here is that you cannot changes the phones from one jack to another, please don't move anymore or you will default everyone you do move. At this point you need to call him back and reprogram the buttons for you. You could have him show you how to do this in the future and have him also move this programming step to customer programming. If you have a sevice contract with him he may not want to do this.

There is no information stored in any phone. The system "sees" what type of phone is plugged in.
Any 24 button phone should be able to be swapped out with any other 24 button phone ever built with no "going dead" or any change in buttons.
The same is true with 12 button phones, 28 button phones, 18 button phones, 8 button phones or 7 button phones.
There should be absolutely no difference in button operation if you replace a 12 button speaker phone with a 12 button standard non-display phone or vice versa.
You will put your physical extension programming back to default by swapping out a 24 button phone with a 12 button or a 12 button where a 7 button was.
If you replace a 12 button with a 12 button and nothing in between, there should be no way possible for your button programming to go away.
Also, there is a very simple program to copy buttons from one phone to another of the same type and that program can be put in the allow list where you find setting the date and time.
I'm in California too and I'd like to drive over and see the "miracle" system that can default button mapping by swapping one 12 button phone for another.
I've been putting in Samsung systems from the very first digital running 1.0 software and phone firmware 1.0. I had some of these so early that the phones even had Korean language on the plastic, we sent them back.

If your handsets are the same - there is no problem in swapping handsets around, there is two ways that your installer may have programmed the keys, 1st is system wide which allows you to move handsets around and the system will put the programming back the same way, the other is to program each handset by itself, with this way as soon as you unplug a handset it defaults back to system wide programming.
You should be able to go to your admin manual and find the copy keyset commands or the station relocation commands which lets you move a complete stations programming and extension number to a new location including ring groups, and voice mail
