Once I reformat a PC and hand them my bill, they usually learn I reformat a LOT of computers.

your better off blocking all pop ups..and allowing them per site when you need it..That'll cure it from happing again..well for pop ups anyway.

I would say a format/re-install would be best. But if you don't want to take the time to do that, I have had really, really good luck running a program called ComboFix in conjunction with MalwareBytes. Here is the link for ComboFix: https://www.combofix.org/download.php

300 GB hard drive - 60 bucks. 2 hours work and you're done. Then you mount the old drive, clean it, and copy off the data. And the new drive is probably faster than the old one. So you get a nice clean system for almost nothing.

After awhile things start to escalate- more stuff going on, can't close the pop-ups, a whole string of Windows security allert icons going up and down the task bar. Then it gets really pissed off and takes you to a Viagra site. When I try to bring up the task manager or even Windows explorer it won't let you so there's no chance of downloading any scans.
I'm thinking of taking the HD out (and burning it), replacing it and doing a fresh WinXP install but I'm open to suggestions. This guy has virtually nothing on this machine and just uses it for the internet (with Firefox).
-Hal goto bleepingcomputer download "combofix" run it, it gets rid of all these. i had one with exactally the same problem yesterday, 45 minutes of combofix the computer is good as new

A great many malware/viruses are aware of apps like Malwarebytes, Combofix etc and will not let them run even in safe mode. One possibility is to dismount the drive, put it in a clean system and then scan the hard drive that way. This will get rid if all but the heuristic viruses which can hide themselves when not resident. Often it can break the grip of the malware enopugh that you can run a cleaner (or two) when it is remounted.

Well wadya know. It booted in safe mode and I ran Malware bytes from a USB drive and it got rid of the problem. Rebooted normally and everything is OK except for a popup that says McAfee needed to be reinstalled. So I removed McAfee- had to use their removal tool because add/remove programs did nothing even after stopping it in task manager. Then I installed AVG.
I'm sure I'll be back next week.

AVG is far better than Symantec and McAfee. It is far leaner, cleaner and does not choke the <oops!> out of the CPU.

I have to agree with PMCook. That being said, however, I decided to try Combofix, but was unable to shut down AVG to do the scan. It just kept re-appearing when I cancelled it out in the Task Manager.

I think they make them difficult to shut down on purpose to thwart virus' from doing that.
