AVG Free is a good program but I typically don't put it on client PCs because to me AVG Free is one of those things where you still need to be aware of your actions and it won't catch the latest and greatest tricks these jerks do to hijack a PC.

I've had great success with the consumer version of Trend Micro on relatively older hardware (Pentium 3`ish stuff).

I'm using Panda, occasionally manually 'checked' by SPY-BOT S&D. I had been using AVG free, but the new version would NOT load, and the old version wouln't run on my XP after I got an Explorer 7 update.
When my Panda runs out this time, I might try AVG again.
Oh, & I concur that Norton and MacAfee are both hogs that create more problems than they cure.

Lately I'm liking Avira for the small footprint and added features over AVG, only drawback is an occational popup on the free version. AVG is not bad tho, used to use that one.
Spybot is great. CCCleaner is too, but I wouldn't put it on a client machine.

Avira also works great on Win7
