Well, I am in the same boat as most techs. Proprietary software requiring the PC platform has kept me with PC most of my computing life. I know my way around a PC pretty good don't see myself changing over anytime soon.

However, I did manage to work out a little trade with a customer, some phones for a MAC Mini. I did it for two reasons....the kids use them at school, so its something they can learn on, and I understand the MACs do home movies really well. It was a good trade.

So my specs on the Mini are 2.0 Intel Core 2 with 1 GB RAM. 120 GB hard drive, super drive, wireless....etc. MAC OS X 10.4

I have some basic questions. If I wanted to install a larger drive, can I get any SATA laptop drive and use it?

Would you install the drive and just boot to the operating disk to install? Like Windows?

Should I add RAM?

Should I upgrade to the latest OS? Can I use the OS disks from my friends Macbook?

I suppose these are the basic questions to start.

Great trade and welcome to the world of Apple!

I too have a Mac mini and mine is my full media library for my entertainment system. I have the DVI output going to my projector. I have an external iOmega TB drive. I store all my movies/TV shows/photos/etc. on it.

1. The best drive to get is an external that takes Firewire 400. I wouldn't suggest "cracking open" the mini to add a HDD. It can be done, but no reason, when there is a Firewire 400 port, for just that. I would suggest LaCie's -> https://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=11158

2. You can have 2GB total RAM in that. Initially it comes with two 512's and you have to remove them to add two 1GB sticks.

3. You can upgrade to 10.5.6 with the 10.5 install disk and an Intel chip (which you have).

Well..not leaving my Dell laptop behind anytime soon....LOL...

But so far, I do like the interface, and I have found most things fairly simple so far.

Since I don't have the original Leopard install disks, what can I do to either make a set or backup the system?

The OSX 10.5 operating system disks from the MacBook would be fine to use.

If you attach an external drive as suggested, you can use the program "Time Machine", which does system backups on a schedule. All of which can be used a restore points.

https://www.apple.com/macosx/features/timemachine.html

Read details on the link, it will answer any questions about the program you may have. BTW, I use it an love the ease!

I did the backup using time machine. Pretty cool. So if my HDD ever crashed and I had to replace it, I would need the OS X Leopard disk to do the restore. Am I reading this correctly?
