For resume value, I figured I'd register to take the A+ Essential/IT Tech certification. Since they are essentially two tests that make up one cert, do I have to take them on separate occasions or can I take them back-to-back the same day? I would ask Comptia but you guys are so much faster... Thanks for any help.

CompTIA A+ Essentials has 100 questions and exam 220-602 (IT Technician) has 90 questions. Both exams only allow 90 minutes to complete. The passing score for Essentials is 675 and for the IT Technician is 700.
You can take them on the same day, but I tell my students to take them at least a couple of days apart. Sitting for that length of time is very difficult for most people. Besides it gives you a chance to review the material again for the second exam. I would take the Essential then the IT Tech. The IT Tech builds on the Essentials. You will know how you did on the exam before you leave the testing centering.
Make sure to take a few practice exams to be prepared for the way the questions are worded. Remember you have less than 60 seconds for each question.
If you have questions, please let me know. Good luck!

I have my compTIA+. I took both tests on the saem day, not that bad if you know your stuff. As a former professional recruiter, nobody really cares about the A+ unless it is for an entry level bench tech job or like a copier repair job, but even then they have tests you ave to take anyyways.
But I guess like you said it looks good on a resume.

I took both the same day. I only needed about 50 minutes ea test. If you have 5+ years experience troubleshooting computers, these aren't too big of a deal.
The practice tests will give you an idea where you're at.

I'd say take them the same day.
And as far as how much it helps, it depends on the type of job. Bench tech, IT Helpdesk, or similar it's normally a requirement. Coding or network related it just looks pretty on your resume.

Same for me. I took both the same day. I used Trandscenders and scored pretty high. As for resumes I thought it would help out but MCSE looks a lot better. I still think experience trumps education everytime.

^^^MCSE always beats an A+, but you would be suprised on the amount of companies that won't hire a person even if they have 5+ years experience but no degree.

I took my A+ test last summer...I mainly did it so I could get out of a couple classes at Toledo. I did the IT technician tests. They were very easy and only took about an hour total.
