if you punch down to either 568a or b the white blue will be in the proper position for analog use

I wouldn't suggest just punching down a single pair

Yes, I didn't mean just punch the one pair on an 8 pin panel.

I know you weren't Bill . I just wanted to clarify it

another point you really need to see how the other end of the cable is terminated before deciding weather to use a or b

In my Little part of the world, 568b is the Norm. If you look on the back of the Patch Panel, there will be an Punch Down Inst. Just Follow What it say's. And we may as well get used to Punching our cable's to a Patch Panel, Most Phone System's are Comming out Rack Mountable.

Typically the standard in the US is B. Here in Canada we perfer to use A. The reason being that with A the orange pair is in the correct position for both voice (on a four wire system) and data.

The patch panel part number will typically tell how the jacks are wired A or B.

I just need to make sure I am punching down fax machines and 1140's up correctly.

Not quite sure what you are asking or that you even understand what you are doing. You should never use a patch panel for voice and telephone devices unless maybe it's IP phones. Patch panels and the wiring are for data.

That said, if you must use a patch panel it and the jacks would be wired the same as data- with all 4 pair terminated as either 568A or B.

I think for some reason you seem to think that the patch panels are wired differently for analog or single pair devices. All "adaptations" must be made external to the patch panel or jacks with adapters or patch cables that break out the pairs. If someone has been doing contrary to this they are wrong.

This is exactly why patch panels should never be used for anything but data- it's too hard to utilize individual pairs for things like faxes and other devices.

If the current technician has a “special” color code that is being used to identify analog and digital ports, you should get it from him/her prior to their departure.

If your talking about a 66 Block with Cross Connect on it, Then Yes, use the White Blue Pair on Both end's For A Fax Line.

If your talking about a 66 Block with Cross Connect on it, Then Yes, use the White Blue Pair on Both end's For A Fax Line.

Of course that would depend on if it were already in use now wouldn't it.

You have to understand how this is done as well as the color code and pair numbering. Any pair can be used for anything as appropriate. It's common to have a phone on pair #1 (and 2) and a fax on pair #3 with two jacks on a plate.

So to answer your question, what you do at the crossconnect depends on how the jack or jacks are configured on the other end. In a perfect world all this would be done correctly, logically and neatly but this isn't a perfect world. Unfortunately more times than not installations like this turn out to be a total mess that would challenge a seasoned telecom pro. So don't expect to walk in and take this over or get the answers that you will need to handle this kind of job here. It sounds like your experience and knowledge is lacking and it takes years to get to where a tech is competent to handle this stuff.
