The process problem is everywhere. Too many groups with too many managers. Too many bean counters figuring how many good jobs in eight techs have to clear. Some problems are not that simple and require hours of investigation, but the system doesn't allow for that.

Flakey pairgain card… OE/LEN goin’ goofy… misbehaving phone OR PATCH CABLE… bad premise wiring or jack in the apartment and/or complex… All of these sound plausible problems.

Translations optioning in the switch… I don’t see how that one would be intermittent at all.

Another thing that I think could be happening is the POTS (plain old telephone service) is being half-tapped with another dial tone circuit. The tip conductor of EdSmith’s line is somehow periodically shorting to the ring conductor of another customer’s dial tone service. I’d suspect wet cable (more likely) or a 66 block in an IDF or MDF in his complex that could be getting knocked around occasionally (less likely.) When EdSmth goes off-hook to draw dial-tone he’s getting two for the price of one.

EdSmith, next time this happens, take a close listen to the dial-tone before dialing a number… Does it sound perfectly normal? … Or does it sound like maybe there are two dial-tones together in unison? Dial a digit… Did the dial tone you still hear change in any way from before you hit a button? … If it did that’s what’s happening … Your line is shorting to another line (we’d call it a half-tap.) Also try continuing to dial as normal even when the dial tone doesn’t go away. Will the call go through and the dial tone stay on the line but you can talk through it? That would absolutely confirm half-tapped to another line.

Kyle,
GJ8… I KNOW what company you work for LOL. Quit there over a year ago and haven’t head that one in awhile!

Mr. Smith basically the best you can do is just keep good records at this time, and keep on verizon, if it becomes a major problem the I would contact the PAC, though like mentioned earlier this should be a a last resort

Dexman,

Thanks for your offer to help. The response to my posting is overwhelming. To answer your question, my tel. no. is 201-653-xxxx.

As for whether the problem occurs to others in my apt complex, I don't know, but I'll post a question on the Tenants Association Forum.

I will email the url of this thread to Verizon Customer service, for what it's worth. I suspect that the problem will only happen again in about a month's time. At that time, I'll try pulse-dial. If the problem indeed doesn't happen again, I'll regret that the real root cause will not be known, for the satisfaction of the all those who responded to this thread.

On a lighter note;
Soon after I had gotten this telephone number, I had ordered pizza from Domino's. I got a call from the delivery guy asking me to come down to get the pizza. So I went down, with my money. The delivery guy was nowhere to be seen! After some headscratching, it turned out that the delivery guy had gone to the address of the previous owner of my tel.no. That address was in the projects, and Dominos had a policy of not entering apt buildings in the projects!

I'm a little late to jump in here, but do you have an entry phone system that connects through your telephone? If it's one of the older types that goes in series with your phone line that could certainly be where the problem lies.

Just another note... Make sure pulse-dial works when things are ok. Here in Fayetteville, NC area, TT is the norm and if you don't request PD, you might not have it! I swear this is true!
