So that if you are in a office situation where you can hear the extension ring (that you have a DS key for) you can pick up the ring extension by pressing the DS key.

In MMC302 you would put whatever stations in pickup group 01 for instance and then assign a GPIK button on the phone with extender 01 so the button would look like GPIK01 or if you don't have a spare button you would have to use a pickup code.
