Does using different versions of WinSPM change the switch? If the version that we are using is 4, and I upgrade it to 9, is there a possiblity it will cause the switch to stop working?

The software version does not affect the switch. Your software version cannot be a lower release than your switch or it won't work correctly. You can use a newer version of software with an older switch and it will work just fine.
