I am trying to setup a third T1 card in a Merlin Legend. With this card it will exceed 80 trunks but the ML manual says it is fine as long as this card is the last on the carrier and is set in tandem. I understand I have to set the switch type as either Legend-ntwk or Legend-PBX for tandem mode to work but when I try the console beeps and don't take it.

Anybody knows of reasons why the Legend would refuse to set a T1's switch type as Legend-*?

Merlin network is ISDN and needs the 24th channel for signaling. The processor needs to see that line.

From the Legend documentation (System Planning, page 60):

"In Release 6.0 or later, if the switch is part of a private network
and a tandem PRI trunk (programmed as Legend-PBX or Legend-NTWK) has
some B-channels that would bring the total number of trunks over the
system limit of 80, the 100D module for that tandem PRI trunk should
be placed in the last slot in the carrier. In this manner, the 100D
module will contain the last lines in the system, and any B-channel
over the 80 line/trunk limit will be ignored. However, the D-channel
will still function even if the 100D module exceeds the line capacity
of the system
. The number of B-channels must be the same on each
networked system." (my emphasys)

Is either this doesn't work or I am doing something else wrong... can you think on any other reason it won't accept Legend-* as switch type?

If any of the tie lines are programmed in pools try removing them. Then change the switch type.

I was able to set the board to Legend-Ntwk after replacing the T1 card. But now I get "POOL BUSY &/OR OOS" (Code 4C03) when I try to dial out through that card. Here is my config:

The last time I ran into that I ended up having to reprogram the entire switch with a 100-D card in EACH cabinet. Worked for me, hope that helps.

Is the ptp t-1 esf/b8zs? How about the other end, is it configured with 8 lines and the correct switch type? Do you have the correct switch numbers identified on the lines?
If you have a 100D module with an apparatus code of 517M15 it won't work.

The other end is a PC computer running the asterisk software to act as a VoIP gateway. Its configuration is known to work in similar environments, only difference being in this case we exceed the 80 trunk limit in the ML:

zapata.conf
-----------
span=1,1,0,esf,b8zs
bchan=1-7
unused=8-23
dchan=24

zaptel.conf
-----------
switchtype=national
signalling=pri_net
pridialplan=unknown
rxwink=300
group=2
channel => 1-7
