I have two questions how would you connect a nortel ata to a nortel 6x16? Then the 2nd question is would you be able to use a rotary dial phone within the ata?

It has been a LOOONG time since I did all that - Old 6x16, & Rotary phone
But an ATA connects to a digital port just like a phone does.
Make sure it has 2 I/C.

What I am not 100% sure about, is if the New ATA2 units will work on the old system.
If it does not, you may need the OLD ATA units that are about 6-8 inches long and 4 inches wide.

I would also think that a rotary phone should just work on it.

AND I am sure that other techs will chime in if my memory is not that great.

I never made a market in 616's, but it looks like you can. The * and # are replaced with 1 and 3 in the instruction set.

I appreciate you guys and the help you all give,the model number of my pbx is NT5B01, and I should have thrown in the fact that I have VoIP (google voice) only and was also going to ask if my nortel pbx would have been able to convert the pulse dialing the same as a panasonic did but I was told that only the panasonic would do that,but I still might buy the ATA anyway.

Need the Software info not the PBX info (actually called a KSU - Key Service Unit) .
Software is a cartridge in the top on the unit.


NTlayoff was partially correct the first time and that is:
- ATA2 does not work with DR1 Software
- Features available are dependant on the software version of the KSU

FYI - The NT5B01 is a NON-DS Cabinet meaning it does not support Disconnect Supervision which is required for Voice Mail systems and maybe Fax machines so that the 6X16 can release the call when the caller hangs up.
If you ever upgrade the software to DR5 then make sure it is NON-DS software version.
All NON-DS has black text and all DS has Turquoise/Teal text on the cabinets and software cartridges.

If you are needing to hook up a Voip line (SIP) then you need a converter for the trunk port such as a Mediatrix 4102 or alike.

6X16 Trunk ports dial Rotary by default and must be changed to Tone in Line programming.

I visited the OP's website link. He already has an ATA for dial tone. This is for rotary dial phones as extensions. Geeze, get a KXT-308 and let it give you 8 rotary dial to TT converters.

I remember what I hated about Nortel and their part numbers. Our host lists the 5b01 as a 616 DR5 with DS. USEDPH

In my mind NT5B01 is a NON-DS KSU and the rest (DS's) have 2 letters at the end NT5B01??.

I believe that the Used Phones link above that Carl posted is an NT5B01FD (hard to read but there is such a part) therefore yes that one is DS.


As for ATA2 my Nortel chart (actually from Nortel) only shows that ATA2 is not compatible with DR1...the rest are compatible.
Standard ATA works on both DR1 and DR2 etc.

So I question that shortened 3rd party chart created by Nev-comm but if anyone can prove this theory it would be nice.

I just had a second look at that picture while closing it and appears to be a NON-DS DR1 software selling with a DS Cabinet, I don't think that will work out for whom ever buys it.

I have decided to leave this addition alone, as I have a pretty cool system that I like, I should add that I have already added 2 VoIP lines, and it works very well with this nortel system. I will still add the software that I was asked to show, very soon, and from this post I learned a lot, you guys really know your stuff, and are are a very big help so thank you.

Did the 6x16 have an internal ATA built-in like the CICS did, or was that unique to the CICS?

CICS has 1 built in ATA port
BCM50 has 4 built in ATA ports (activated by kecodes)

On my shelf are 11 Panasonic phone systems. All of them have "ATA" capabilities and I have 7-10 Panasonic display phones and 3 TD1232 KSU's without looking too far into my storage place.

I have no idea if you bought the ATA or not, but I'd be willing to part with one of my systems and a phone for not a lot of money. That translates to $100-200 with shipping and most of these systems have CID trunks, but not to extensions.

Think about it.

That looks like the old entry level module that was called restricted in our area. A basic 4X8 config. Beyond that required a software cartridge replacement to get the other 2X8 ports.

I think the (rare) 4X8 was produced since day one then probably phased out shortly after 3X8's came along.

Southernphoneman your software picture has confirmed that your system is indeed a NON-DS (No Disconnect Supervision).

Kind sir I really appreciate the offer, I really do, but at this point I already have the nortel 6x16 in service with 6 extensions and thorougly enjoy it and it fit my needs really well. And I have over 15 other nortel phones in my "overstock" as well. But thank you just the same. But as I learned here I have let go of the idea of adding on any ATA's for this system. No. They were designed for the SL series (SL-1, SL-100) PBX.

Personally - I would not use the M7100. Work fine but not what I would use..

If I am not mistaken I think you can also use the T series of phones if your software level is high enough. But please someone chime in let me know if that is incorrect.

I have never tried the T-series on the old 6x16.
It may or may not work.

But for the T7316e phone - IF (BIG IF) it works it will act like M7310 phone.
In other words, only the bottom 5 buttons on left and right can be Line Buttons.
But ALL 8 on each side can be anything else.

Somewhere in the back of my mind it seems like you can, but it has to be on dr5.1.xxx maybe?

T series will work on all releases with exceptions:

Yes the T series works on my system as indicated, and Curleycord was right about the buttons, and I want to add something, fowarding calls from one extension to another is something that I am not able to complete. I have followed the directions to the "T" and nothing. I am wondering if my particular system has anything to do with that.

I thought that was the case, and am glad to know its not something that I was doing wrong. Funny thing is when I had the nortel venture system in place, before installing the 6x16, is the venture system did foward calls to another extension.
